5 Honest Mistakes by People Visiting Chinese Countries

It’s hardly surprising that there are some cultural no-no’s to steer well clear of when visiting China. Chinese culture has been around for a long time and has some very long standing traditions that simply do not exist in western culture. Below are 5 of the most common mistakes made by people when they first visit China, I hope you find them informative and interesting.

1. Never Leave a Chopstick Upright

The easiest of all the mistakes listed here is leaving your chopsticks upright in your bowl when eating. Avoid this at all cost because chopsticks presented in the upright position means you’re offering food to the dead. So, don’t leave them upright in your food, or you’ll risk offending your hosts or friends.

2. The Three T’s - Tibet, Taiwan and Tiananmen

For most mainlanders, Tibet, Taiwan and Tiananmen are sensitive subjects. The simple mentioning of Taiwan or Tibet isn’t offensive, but discussing them as topics often leads to uncomfortable discussion you should invariably try to avoid.

In my personal experience, it can vary from year to year. For example a few years ago there was tension with Tibet, but these days it’s not considered such a taboo topic.

3. Complimenting Their English

In a business context especially, but this is valid everywhere really. People generally dislike being complimented on their English skills, it implies that’s all there is worthy of complimenting. In general, it is important to adopt a subtle and conservative approach with any compliments you give. In general the Chinese people prefer indirectness.

4. Never Giving a Clock as a Gift

Strangely, this is taken very serious for many cultural and linguistic reasons. The Chinese believe the gift of a clock signifies time running out and ultimately death.

More compellingly though, the Chinese term for clock is zhōng and is often used to describe death.

Unlike the west, Chinese culture influences language and language influences culture and customs. It is one of the uniquely Chinese things that make the place and language so fascinating.

5. Give Anything Using One Hand

This seems like a non-issue but using both or giving with two hands goes a long way toward in demonstrating cultural awareness and shows that you’re sincere, committed or serious about whatever you’re doing. It is showing respect.

When exchanging business cards, it is essential to use both hands, with the Chinese side facing up (if your card is bilingual of course), regardless of whether they can read English. Remember to acknowledge and read the card first before putting it away, even leave it on the table until your meeting ends. And remember that not taking it with you at the end when you leave is jus about the worst you could do.

Retail store workers will often hand you your change with two hands, and believe it or not, it is still important to accept your change with both your hands as well.

Obviously, this isn't an exhaustive list. There are many strange and wonderfully quirky traits, traditions and cultures to discover during your travels. We think if you can avoid the above you’ll do just fine.

Being humble and showing respect with your body language is just about the most important aspect. Take care, pay attention, and if you don’t already master it, then learn to read body language.

3 ways to become a successful Network Marketer.

So you have decided to try your hand on network marketing. Many people have succeeded in this business and, done right, you could also make a success of it. There are just a couple of things you need to keep in mind when you start up a network marketing business, and here are 3 golden tips from the experts:

1 – Have goals.

As with any new business, you need to set your goals and aspirations and stick to them like your life depends on it. This way you understand completely what you want from this business and how to go about it. But you will also remind yourself how to stay on track and not to veer off in the wrong direction.
In this business, your goal needs to include that you want to be the best performer of the company, really push your limits. This way, you will soon need a team around you that helps you get to your target sales and incomes.

Another great part of setting goals is thinking about what you wish to achieve a month from now, 6 months from now, a year from now. A new car, new house, saving money for a holiday, or sending your kids off to university.
Don´t just write it down, look up pictures of that new house, print it and put it on a board in your office or even on the fridge. This way you are reminded every day of what you are working towards and it will keep you motivated to work hard.

2 – Have a plan!

You need to put on paper every detail of your business, where it will be in one week and in one month. What revenue do you wish to receive and how many recruits do you want to have at what point in time?
Knowing how much revenue you need each month, will also give you a good idea how many recruits you need, so that is where you get those figures from.

You need to stay on track with your goal, and make sure your recruits are part of your plan, so you all work for the same goal and aspirations.

3 – Prioritize

This third tip is probably the most difficult one of all. Prioritizing is difficult for most people, and this is mostly because, when you are your own boss it is easier to procrastinate than to do the job that is at hand!
Don´t fall in your own trap of procrastination, and stick with your plan!

Don´t overdo the priority management, go day by day to set realistic goals for yourself and your recruits.
Make a planner for the day, and when you need to do a task, do it and finish it. Do not leave it for tomorrow, because you know it needs to be done today. You will get the best results if you prioritize correctly.

Every person in your network has other priorities and you need to be respectful of those, but you need to focus the priorities on what creates the best results for you. If it doesn´t make you money now, is it really a priority? If t will make you money in the future, how much income will it generate and how much of a priority is it to deal with it now?

If you stay creative and motivated, you will find that it comes really easy to generate a great monthly income and you will see you are one of the more successful people within a network marketing company. Make sure you surround yourself with likeminded and hard working people, and you will soon reap the rewards of your hard work.

A starters Manual for Network Marketing

I started out in network marketing a while ago, and when I did, I had to deal with attracting good marketers as well as selling myself to potential clients, and after doing that for a while, I now have both these things under control taking some very simple steps.
If you are starting out as a  network marketer too, then keep reading, you will find this article very helpful!

Choose your team members carefully

First of all, you need to be careful in the promotion process of your business. Don´t get too excited when the first applicant walks, in, even though you might be desperate for more people… you need to sound them out. Find out what their interests are, what they like, and what they have sold before. Ensure they fit your company ideas and goals.
If you just take on any person… you might fail with your business.

Be organised

The second part of running a successful Network Marketing Business, is keeping a calendar. Always schedule everything in, and keep to the schedule like your life depends on it.
You need to know what the people in your network are doing and who with, but you also need to pursue leads yourself to get the revenue flowing in steadily. Not only does that show you are serious about your business. It will also show your people that you are not to be fooled by excuses as to why there is no revenue coming from them. If you can find the leads, so can they!

Since you are passionate about what you do, you need to make sure you market a product that you are passionate about! If you love flowers, then make sure your business has something to do with flowers. This way you will be able to sell the product better, as you already believe in and love the product. When you love something, it is easier to sell than when you don´t really like it, or understand it.

Be social

The third free tip I give here is “network with the network” it is of upmost importance that you network with other marketers, and find out what works for them and what doesn't. Don´t just socialize with your own recruits, but go outside of your network, and find out what tickles the competition.

Now you should have a better understanding of what vital steps you need to take when you start an online marketers network. Hopefully you will follow these three steps and be a successful marketer.

Be your own boss through Network Marketing

Some people want to work for the big man, know they have to work from 9 to 7 every day, expect holidays when they are due, and rely on a fixed salary each month without having to put much effort in it.
Others are more adventurous, want the big time, thrive on the uncertainty if they make enough money to last the month, and get ecstatic when they have exceeded their own income expectations.
The flexible time and freedom that comes with being your own boss is addictive, and once you have had a taste of the adventure of being your own boss, it is hard to go back to 9 to 5 again!

Investing money in your own company

Once you have decided to become your own boss, you need to invest money in your new company. The best way to go about this is by joining anetwork marketing business that suits you, one that you are interested in and that you like, so you can sell it well.
Really ask yourself, what is my passion? And once you have found the answer, use that to your advantage and start a business in the field you like best.
Liking what you sell is half the job done, and this will show in your returns.

Become a freelancer

You can start off as a freelancer, work from home and get used to the fact you are now your own boss. This is a very successful solution if you just start off on your own. You can even start this next to your 9 to 5 job, so you get used to working on your own while still enjoying the security of a full time job.
Once you are comfortable you are fine on your own, you ditch the job, and become your own boss!

Work from home

Working from home is the ideal environment if you are starting up a network marketing business. You don´t need an office, and you can hold meetings, and presentation evenings at the homes of potential recruits and buyers.
Most multilevel marketing recruits bring home a 6 figure salary every year, but this will only happen if you really work for it, put all your effort in it, and truly believe in the product you are selling.

Find the best network marketing company

Finding the best network marketing company is difficult, but there are some amazing ones out there.
Research each company carefully and ask for an invite to one of their presentation meetings.  Be sure to prepare yourself for their meeting, asking all the right questions so you are fully aware what you are getting in to.
You could also ask a friend to join, and set up the business together to start with.

Network Marketing companies are usually very well equipped to deal with new freelancers, and they will give you all the information you need to ensure your business thrives and becomes successful. Your success is their success, so never be afraid to ask for help in setting up your business.

Are you travelling to Hong Kong? Here are some Do’s and Don’ts

The diversity and dynamics of Hong Kong make it a ’must-see’ city! Hong Kong offers many unique experiences to visitors, such as The Peak, Star Ferry, Tramways, dynamic street markets, vast shopping areas, Disneyland, Ocean Park and much more. It also boasts an excellent public transportation network, it is so easy to get around Hong Kong by MTR (Subway), Buses, Ferries and Trams etc. The most attractive is the Tsim Sha Tsui, Yau Ma Tei and Mong Kok areas.

Do Purchase an Octopus Card

There's an Octopus card return desk right after you step off the Airport Express at HKG. The Octopus Card is the most useful & convenient type of Hong Kong travel pass.

The "Octopus" is a 'smart card' used on almost all forms of public transport (Bus, Minibus, Ferry, Peak Tram, Tram & MTR Trains). It can also be used to settle payments at stores, such as 7-Eleven and Starbucks, etc.

To use it, you just place your Octopus card over the reader and your payment is deducted. You can add value to the smart card at MTR stations and many retail outlets.

Don't expect places to open early

Retail shops generally open from 10am to 7pm daily, although those in popular shopping areas such as Causeway Bay and Tsim Sha Tsui will stay open until 9:30pm or even later, especially on weekends.

Most restaurants stay open until around 11pm, while bars and clubs don’t close until the early hours of the morning. In popular nightlife areas such as Lan Kwai Fong and Wan Chai they may never even close.

Nightlife tips when travelling in Hong Kong

Do Experiment with Local Cuisine

The food in Hong Kong is known for being delicious and while you are there I recommend you become adventurous and try the local fare. The majority of local restaurants will have their menus in English, and worst case scenario, you’ll at least see images of the food, so don’t be afraid, ordering is easy. Be more daring than usual and it will pay off in stories for years to come.

Don’t Stay in the City

Hong Kong really does have everything, but no trip to Hong Kong is complete without a trip to the Big Buddha or to the south end of the island.

Big Buddha sightseeing in Hong Kong

Hong Kong has more depth to it than its persona as a concrete jungle. A trip is often made by escaping the city.  I visited the peaceful marina at Aberdeen, the boardwalk and the small market at Stanley, absolutely lovely and definitely worth a trip.

Do Go To The Harbour At Night

No doubting that Victoria Harbour is a dazzling cityscape in its own right, but hang around for A Symphony of Lights. It is a nightly multimedia show, which involves more than 40 buildings on both sides of the harbour.

Synchronised to music, coloured lights and laser beams perform an unforgettable show celebrating the energy, spirit and diversity of Hong Kong.
The show is for free public enjoyment and no admission ticket is required.
